Job Summary

Performs product design activities related to the development, manufacturing, and assembly of new automotive lighting products in accordance with company and customer requirements.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Works closely with primary designer and design engineer, and follows company CAD methods, standards, and procedures to create CAD data for automotive lighting products
2. Develops feasibility data from information provided by the customer, primary designer, and/or engineer
3. Creates 3D CAD data at various levels of completion required to support program milestones
4. Ensures the integrity of the design by:
a. Evaluating design standards and guidelines
b. following tooling/manufacturing standards and guidelines
c. Troubleshooting appearance issues
d. Reviewing with design team, primary designer, and engineering
e. Supporting design reviews and meetings
5. Identifies and communicates tooling, molding, and manufacturing issues to primary designer and/or engineering
6. Creates CAD models utilizing preferred modeling practices
7. Maintains open and frequent communication with primary designer and/or supervisor on program status
8. Performs data checks for all program release events/milestones, as required
9. Prepares final layouts and detail drawings by following standards and engineering requirements
10. Estimates and manages time to complete all program deliverables on time to support project timing
11. Coaches, mentors, and advises other designers
12. Performs all other duties as assigned

Responsibilites

Requirements

1. Meets one of the following Education and Experience requirements:
a. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Design, or a related discipline, plus 4 to 6 years of CAD design experience in automotive parts manufacturing ― including 2 years of experience in the design of complex exterior lighting or other styled automotive component design; OR
b. Associate’s Degree in Engineering, Design, or a related discipline, plus 6 to 8 years of CAD design experience in automotive parts manufacturing ― including 3 years of experience in the design of complex exterior lighting or other styled automotive component design; OR
c. High School Diploma or GED, plus 8 years of CAD design experience in automotive parts manufacturing ― including 4 years of experience in the design of complex exterior lighting or other styled automotive component design

2. Strong knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
a. Knowledge of the design of plastic injected molded parts and associated tooling
b. Knowledge of automotive lighting technology, tooling, lamp construction, and manufacturing
c. Organizational, planning, and prioritizing skills
d. Analysis and problem solving skills
e. CAD data construction skills
f. Design skills — skilled at complete modeling of products
g. CAD skills — proficiency using standard industry CAD software (such as Catia or UG)
h. Computer skills — proficiency using standard business software (including MS Office)
i. Written and verbal communications and presentation skills
j. Interpersonal skills — to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of authority and to maintain composure in sensitive, pressure, and confrontational situations
