Job Summary

Supervises and coordinates the activities of a team of optical engineers who provide engineering, design, and development support for automotive lighting product development and launches.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Assigns workload and priorities for his/her optical design team
2. Promotes efficient and effective interaction between optical design group and other corporate functions to ensure that optical designs meet customer expectations and NAL standards
3. Coordinates the work of his/her team with other corporate functions to ensure that pre-prototype, prototype, and production hardware performance agrees with optical design predictions
4. Maintains ongoing communications with department management and other corporate functions regarding the status and issues of his/her optical design team’s projects
5. Oversees the development of new techniques and methodologies for optical design with new light sources, new manufacturing techniques, and other new technologies
6. Develops new concepts of improving computer-aided engineering capabilities and product performance to meet company's business strategy
7. Plans, leads, and manages the implementation of new optical design software packages
8. Plans and oversees the creation of optical design processes and work instructions
9. Mentors, trains, and coaches his/her optical design team members to raise their skill level
10. Provides resource projection (as needed) for departmental budgeting
11. Performs all other duties as assigned



12. Education & Experience — One of the following:
a. Master's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with courses in optics and physics plus 4 to 6 years of experience in optical design and/or photometry; OR
b. Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with courses in optics and physics plus 6 to 8 years of experience in optical design and/or photometry (optical design experience in automotive parts manufacturing is preferred)
13. Additional Experience:
a. Experience in lab set up and testing methods
b. Experience with feasibility studies, hardware evaluations, and launch support
(i) 3 to 5 years of experience in a supervisory or lead position
14. Strong knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
a. Knowledge of testing methods and government requirements for automotive designs
b. Data analysis and problem solving skills
c. Organizational and planning skills
d. Computer skills — proficiency using standard business software (including MS Office)
e. Written and verbal communications and presentation skills
f. Interpersonal skills — to confidently interact with individuals at all levels of authority
